In Person Program The Ideal Cancer Center: Using a Patient-Centered Care Model Created by Designers Recovering from Cancer Treatment Hosted and Presented By: Description: In 2024, an estimated 2 million people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer according to the National Cancer Institute. As cancer evolves with new treatments and technologies, it’s crucial that healthcare facilities are designed to meet the needs of both patients and the teams caring for them. Modern cancer treatment centers must not only focus on essential medical functions like diagnosis and treatment but also care environments that support patient comfort. Well-being, and better health outcomes. Our presenters, designers that have experienced cancer treatment, will explore the best ways to develop ideal cancer centers; state-of-the-art cancer care facilities that enhance both patient experience and clinical care.  Learning Objectives:  Understand patient-centered care, including the wide variety of cancer patient experiences during the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and how the built environment affects the delivery of care. Examine the challenges of creating the Ideal Cancer Center which provides patient-centered care for inpatient and outpatient environments with seamless transitions between the two. Review the variety of modalities for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as well as approaches to cancer treatment and recovery which extend beyond the body, to the mind and emotional well-being. Evaluate the lessons learned creating whole-body, patient-centered cancer care - including multi-purpose spaces for activities such as patient recovery from chemotherapy and radiation therapy, physical restoration of body tissues and functionality when the treatment has ended, and spaces for patient caregivers to gather to discuss care and provide each other with emotional support. She has designed every modality and department in a hospital, outpatient facility and skilled nursing facility, experience that led OSHPD to invite her to serve as an Emergency Design Task Force Team Leader. Teresa’s planning philosophy integrates Lean principles and evidence-based design to create highly efficient, state-of-the-art health facilities that promote healing, excellent patient outcomes, and staff satisfaction. Her projects exceed 26.5 million SF, over $18 billion; she is an internal educator, author, and past Chair of the AIACV Academy of Architecture for Health. Nanci Timmins, Chief Fire and Life Safety Officer Nanci Timmins is a Chief Fire and Life Safety Officer with over 20 years' experience in the fire industry. Prior to her position as a Fire and Life Safety Officer, she was a Fire Marshal for the State of Michigan and a firefighter. Nanci has certifications in NFPA and holds degrees in Psychology and Fire Science.. Lauren Wagner, Lead Interior Designer Lauren has spent a decade working on workplace environments as an interior designer. Her career launched while working in the San Francisco Bay Area for various tech giants. Her enthusiastic approach to workplace strategy and interior design is focused on the synergy that occurs between the two, thereby relating directly to healthcare design. Lauren has used her approach to make healthcare facilities a happy and healthy place to heal, work, and thrive.
