AIA Orange County Fall Mixer and Special Presentation by the AIAOC Housing Committee: AIAOC Housing Charrette to Achieve Attainable Housing

  • AIAOC 1981 Orchard Drive Newport Beach United States (map)

The AIAOC Housing Committee is dedicated to addressing housing challenges in Orange County by promoting innovative and sustainable architectural solutions. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life through thoughtful design and strategic planning. The goal of this charrette was to identify attainable housing solutions for the Orange County market, specifically targeting first time homebuyers. The designers and architects were tasked with creating an attainable housing solution at 279 Technology Drive, Irvine, tailored to first-time homebuyers with a household income range of $65,000 - $85,000.  Teams determined the optimal mix and number of units, the amenities included in each unit, and the overall site amenities that would target a range in purchase price from $260,000 - $340,000. The goal was to provide a dwelling unit within the range of 350-750 sq ft that could be suitable for a single, a couple, or small family. The objective was solutions that are equitable and realistically implementable, considering the financial constraints and needs of the target demographic.

Teams focused on cost-effective construction techniques, incorporating energy-efficient systems to reduce long-term utility costs, and offering a variety of unit sizes to appeal to different buyers. The proposed solution balanced affordability with quality, ensuring the housing units meet the high standards expected in Orange Countys competitive market. You will be impressed with these designs!  Come on out and check out the projects, hear from the designers, get some dinner, earn one AIA HSW Unit, and have some fun too!
