Operational Insights on the Mental and Behavioral Health Continuum of Care

Course Description:



Leading into Mental Health Awareness Month, the AIAOC Healthcare committee will host a discussion with experts from the design industry and representatives from the owner and clinical side of the mental and behavioral health continuum of care. Attendees will learn from design teams about three project types on the continuum of care including a Navigation Center, an Acute Addiction and Cessation treatment facility, and a Psychiatric Heath Facility (PHF). Then dive into a panel discussion including representatives from the facility project management, clinician, and operator spaces to share their experiences with facility design and safety, insights into addiction trends and the future of treatment, and reflections on successes and challenges of program operation. 

Learning Objectives:


  • Attendees will learn how the City of Buena Park used a census to identify a baseline number of individuals living without housing and in emergency shelters against which to measure all homelessness prevention and intervention efforts and create safer environments for patients and staff.


  • Attendees will participate in a Discussion about current and future design and management trends in addiction and their impact on the healthcare system with consideration given to patient and staff safety and well-being.


  • Attendees will learn about the variety of environments on the continuum of care and advance the discussion on how to improve access to mental and behavioral health care in Southern California.


  • Attendees will learn about accessibility requirements for mental health facilities for the safety of its occupants.


  • Attendees will learn the role Psychiatric Health Facilities (PHF) play in the continuum of care and understand the unique requirements of this building type for the welfare of patients and staff.
