The goal of this panel discussion is to learn about the management of a consulting practice including sustaining the business after a reputation has been established, how to navigate opportunities to pivot the practice, and mentorship/succession planning. The panel will help the attendees understand establishing guidelines for the practice’s growth and strategic planning in personal development.

Speakers:

Anne Bretaña, IIDA

As Co-Managing Director of the Gensler Newport Beach office, Anne has more than 25 years of experience in the Architectural Design industry and is recognized for her leadership ability to create thoughtful and innovative workplace environments. She has experience across a wide range of industries including financial services, technology, professional services and corporate campuses.  Her clients include world-class companies such as Rutan & Tucker, Trammell Crow Company, Allergan, PIMCO and Broadcom.  Anne is committed to thoughtful, research-based problem solving and is focused on developing workplace strategies that support her client’s business and improve the employee experience.  She also serves as a People & Strategy leader for Gensler’s Southwest Region and is passionate about mentorship as a tool to engage and inspire the next generation of talent.  Anne is a NCIDQ accredited professional and earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Kentucky. 

Ashley Brewer, AIA, LEED AP BD+C

With over 11 years in the industry she brings a wide range of design experience from architecture to branded interiors, with a focus on multiple industries from technology, media, financial services, professional services and corporate campuses. Her award winning work has been recognized by both the AIA and IIDA and has been published by Interior Design Magazine. As a design director, Ashley is passionate about bringing innovative and research-based designs that support her clients purpose and mission. She holds multiple leadership roles within Gensler, as a Studio Leader, Client Relationship Leader and Senior Associate in the Newport Beach office. Ashley is a licensed architect, LEED AP (BD+C) and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from University of California, Berkeley.

Rita S. Carter, AIA, Studio Leader, DLR Group

In everything she does, Rita believes in leaving the world a better place through the power of human-centered and equitable design. As an architect and humanitarian, she combines her love for design with her passion for community service, youth education, and team building.

Rita has over 16 years of experience working on a myriad of national and international projects. As a Higher Education Studio Leader with DLR Group, she focuses on projects that support student success across California Community Colleges and Universities by developing the client’s visions from idea inception through occupancy. She believes project success arises from cultivating personal relationships with her clients and partners built on trust, open communication, exceptional service, and design excellence.

Rita received her Bachelor of Architecture from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and her Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University. Rita is the recipient of Building Design & Construction Magazine’s 40 under 40 award, class of 2018 as the “Steadfast Educator”.

Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP

In 1979, Betsey Olenick Dougherty, FAIA, LEED AP established the firm Dougherty + Dougherty (now Perkins Eastman), and began a career emphasizing design excellence and sustainability for educational and community facilities. Betsey has been actively involved in the American Institute of Architects since 1976, is a former local AIAOC and AIACC President, a former California Regional Director to the AIA Board, National AIA Secretary, and is a former Chancellor of the National AIA College of Fellows. She continues to serve as a member of the California Architects Board Professional Qualifications Committee, the AIA California Long Range Planning Committee, the AIA California Advocacy Committee, and is a Board Member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA).

Wendy Rogers, FAIA, LEED AP

Wendy Rogers is CEO and Chief Talent Officer of LPA Design Studios, an integrated design firm dedicated to creating projects that innovate, inspire and improve people’s lives. Wendy leads a team of more than 400 architects, engineers, landscape architects and interior designers in California and Texas. The firm embraces an inclusive and collaborative approach to create sustainable, timeless and resilient designs for corporate, educational, healthcare, recreation and municipal projects. LPA was recently honored as AIA California’s 2021 Firm of the Year.
