Built in the Los Rios district, the oldest neighborhood in California, The 64,000 sf River Street Marketplace consists of restaurants, retail, food court, and public amenities features agrarian architecture centered around a central green. The architecture and native landscape palette pays homage to the history of the site and surrounding area.

Learning Objectives:


  • Attendees will learn about water conservation through the use of alternative parking field natural resources and energy reductions through manually activated light systems to reduce the carbon footprint.


  • Attendees will discover how good retail design can create a healthier environment for its end users through unique communal gathering spaces.


  • Attendees will learn how to reduce energy consumption in retail design including natural light, building configuration, and operable walls to reduce the carbon footprint.


  • Attendees will learn how to meet California accessibility requirements when using natural resources and native materials.


  • Attendees will learn the importance of tying the design into the cultural heritage of the historic district, while also reimaging retail design into a place for communal gatherings.

Jim Bickel, President



Jim brings extensive experience in project management, design, code analysis and construction documentation of industrial, low-rise office, high-rise office, medical, restaurant, retail, and residential projects. He is responsible for overall management of the firm, while acting as the prime contact and liaison between owners and project teams. He accepts primary responsibility for assuring that both design parameters and construction documents are consistent with the owner’s stated program and budget.

He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University, at San Luis Obispo in 1986. He has been a licensed architect in California since 1989. Jim is a member of the American Institute of Architects and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He is the architect member of both the Granville Design Review committee in Newport Beach and the Marbella Design Review Committee in San Juan Capistrano. In addition, Jim is a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional. 

Kelly Johnson, Principal



Kelly joined the Bickel Group team in 2007 after graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2006 and has been a licensed architect since 2015. In that time, she has worked on a variety of projects in both scale and typology, encompassing a full spectrum of architectural services. She focuses on project management, contract document and construction administration standards and implementation in the office as well as managing many of Bickel Group’s largest projects personally. To achieve success, Kelly strives to understand client goals and build trusted relationships with all parties of the project and construction team. Along with her work in the office, Kelly serves on AIA California’s Professional Practice Advisory Committee and as a subject matter expert for the California Architects Board.
