The Sandi Simon Center for Dance is an expansive new education and performing arts center at Chapman University that redefines a former orange packing house. Landmarked by the National Register of Historic Places, the adaptive reuse strategy preserves the exterior identity while opening the interior structure with a calculated cut through the original floor that allows for a reorganization into three levels and forms a new circulation through the space.

A reception will follow at The Hilbert Museum hosted by CDG Builders.

The expansion of the Hilbert Museum of California Art, an adaptive reuse building at Chapman University, creates a new gateway to the University with connections to Old Towne Orange and the commuter rail station. A new central courtyard links the renovated North and South buildings through an open-air structure that defines the entry and serves as a canvas for the relocated Millard Sheets mosaic mural, “Pleasures Along the Beach” (1969), once the public frontispiece to the Santa Monica Home Savings Bank. The art experience begins here, outside the walls of the museum in a civic space that is porous and accessible to all.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will examine the sustainable possibilities of adaptive reuse as demonstrated through the dance center’s repurposing of its original elements and preservation of historic and culturally significant exterior.

  • Participants will learn about the programming strategy for the dance center, which allows for studio spaces, performances, offices and coursework, as well as spaces for students to socially engage beyond time spent in the classroom to comply with current ADA accessibility codes and standards

  • Participants will review opportunities created within the historic structure for passive sustainable design for the health of its occupants and the challenge of working with pre-existing structural elements.

  • Participants will evaluate equitable community design decisions to engage and promote human connectivity through campus circulation and its positive impact on the well-being of the student population.
