This is a discussion on the Sustainable Forestry initiative program (SFI). The presentation details history, membership, and qualification into the SFI standard and what it means to have that certification.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn about the importance, principles, criteria, and objectives behind the practice of sustainable forestry. We will discuss the history of sustainable forestry originating over concerns about logging practices.
Participants will be informed of the different forest certification programs and how they differ but are all established to focus on the practice of sustainable forestry. We will discuss how sustainable forestry not only protects and establishes healthy forests but also protects wildlife, aquatic animals, water quality and the conservation of biological diversity.
There will be a discussion on the importance of Chain of Custody procurement of forest products ensuring the public that the wood products purchased and utilized on job sites originated from sustainable forests. We also discuss the vast number of products derived from wood, i.e., lubricants, decorative bark, soil amendments, flooring, paint, medicines lumber and many other products. Forest products are also used to produce energy in biomass facilities.
We also discuss the demand for wood worldwide and how sustainable forests can keep up with this demand. This discussion focuses on requirements of growing forests sustainably by not cutting more than you can grow, a 100-year plan for property zoned for timber production, committing to the sustainability of other resources, not just the trees, and wildlife habitats for forest dwellers, pure cold water, recreational opportunities as well as aesthetic enjoyment of our forests.
Lastly will be a discussion on forest management and green building. We discussed how wood is the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly of all building materials. How wood products are a vital component of sound architectural design and facilitate ease of design and construction. We discuss the energy efficiency of a wood-built structure compared to that of a steel or concrete structure. We also discuss the importance of our forests when it comes to carbon sequestration.
