The goal of this panel discussion is to learn about the management of architectural practice, including an understanding of different types of business models, contracts, and project deliveries. The panel will help the attendees understand the logistics of setting up an architectural practice while examining the impacts of contract negotiations, resource management, laws, regulations, insurance, and risks.
Learning objectives:
Attendees will analyze various ways to structure an organization and risks associated with it.
Attendees will learn how to select and apply business strategies for a business situation.
Attendees will learn to identify practice policies and methodologies for risk, legal exposures, and resolutions.
Assess resources within the practice such as staffing, software, accounting, training, etc.

Born in India, Mayuri Joshi, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP (BD+C) is a graduate of Texas A&M University and has over 16 years of Architectural experience. Through her career spanning two different continents, she has worked on diverse projects and practice areas including hospitality, residential, aviation, healthcare, retail and commercial. In her current role at Gensler as a Design Manager, she has managed several Retail Bank of America Projects including ground-ups and tenant Improvements. Amongst other notable projects are 150,000sq.ft. Santa Barbara Waterfront Hotel, 350,000sq.ft mixed use Lakeshore Towers Retail + Parking structure and campus masterplan, DFW Train Station, Atlanta Airport renovation and Fire Station in Houston. She believes in mentoring and supporting fellow architects and is currently serving as co-chair for AIA Orange County – Women in Architecture Committee. She has led many community impact initiatives such as Canstruction for 3 years and was interviewed by KTLA for her award winning design. She is a passionate architect and believes in power of design to transform the world into a better place.

Lindsey Engles, Principal Arclogica, Inc.
Lindsey has been working, mentoring, and teaching in the field of architecture for the past 20 years. She graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo with a Bachelors of Architecture and a minor in Sustainable Environments in 2005 and has been a licensed architect since 2012. Lindsey specializes in sustainable architecture for civic, high-rise, and residential buildings.
Lindsey was previously the Pacific Region Representative for USGBC’s (US Green Building Council) Emerging Professionals, and Executive Director for the Orange County Chapter where she led a major fundraising effort for the Davis Magnet School ‘Greenovation’ project. She is also an advocate for affordable housing and green schools. Lindsey believes that every day provides an opportunity to grow and to learn something new, and is committed to providing mentorship to the next generation of architects and designers to help them on their learning journey. She volunteered her time as the managing advisor for ‘Team OC’ for the 2015 Orange County Solar Decathlon team, and also served as an adjunct faculty member in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at California State University, Fullerton from 2013 – 2019.
Andrea Cohen Gehring, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C
Born in Argentina, Andrea Cohen Gehring, FAIA, LEED-AP BD+C, is a graduate of the USC School of Architecture (BARCH’85) and recently retired as an Architect and Senior Principal focused on Higher Education projects at DLR Group with over 35 years of experience. With a diverse practice and leadership, Andrea is committed to the design of significant architecture that promotes diverse, vibrant campuses with a focus on student success. She is a former Chair of the AIA/National Practice Management Knowledge Community and was elevated to the College of Fellows in 2007. Most recently, Andrea has served as a Board Member for the AIA/CC and the 2014 President of the AIA/LA Chapter. With a history of service to her community and the profession, Andrea strives to set a viable example as a new model for the 21st century architectural large firm Principal, balancing family life with enlightened practice management, and mentoring young women and minorities about family and career goals. She was the Principal-in-Charge for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum renovation project as it opened its doors in the Fall of 2019.
Jamie Knollmiller, AIA
Jamie brings over 16 years of experience to her new architectural practice Knollmiller Architects Inc. Founded in 2019, Knollmiller Architects is a small-scale firm, with large commitment to service, providing personal attention, superb communication & project leadership. Jamie’s experience encompasses a diverse background of project types including residential, retail, restaurant, commercial and medical, both Ground up and Tenant Improvements. Jamie enjoys working clients and contractors throughout the project to keep the team informed and achieve the project goals. Licensed: CA, NV & OR. Certifications: NCARB, LEED AP. Education: University of Southern California.
Sharmila Tankha, AIA
Sharmila is Founding Principal and Partner at STARQ inc.- a multifaceted Architecture, Planning and Building Technology Studio based in Orange County. Sharmila brings over 28 years of experience in Hospitality, Retail and Community design. Instilling her work with deep-seated values culled from Hospitality design, Sharmila constantly pushes the envelope between typologies to design human-centric, experience-driven, and nurturing buildings, places and communities that withstand the test of time. Her work spans a spectrum of scales from smaller Interiors to multifamily and hotels to large master plans in California and various International locations.
As Design Principal at previous firms Jerde and WATG, Sharmila was the creative force behind numerous and significant Mixed Use and Hospitality-focused projects throughout the US, Asia, Middle East, Europe and Africa. She led her teams on several award-winning projects, including a curated guest experience for a Corporate Headquarters Tower in Hong Kong and the Master Plan for Uptown Dubai Urban District. She led a global team for WATG’s largest undertaking thus far – the design for SJM’s “Grand Lisboa Palace” integrated resort on the Cotai Strip in Macau which includes the first ever Palazzo Versace and Karl Lagerfeld boutique hotels in Asia, now due to open in 2021. Sharmila received her Master’s in Building Science degree from University of Southern California, Los Angeles in 1994 and her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India in 1990. She is a licensed architect in the state of California.
