Providing design services can be a risky business. Architects and Engineers (A/E) frequently face the prospect of being sued for an allegedly negligent act, error or omission. However, there are a number of business mistakes that frequently get firms into trouble that have lead to disputes and claims. This session will address five (5) practice errors and methods firms can implement to help manage and minimize risk.

Timothy Corbett, Founder and President of SmartRisk, has extensive experience developing and implementing risk and performance management programs for architects, engineers, environmental consultants and construction professionals. Tim implemented model risk management programs for numerous organizations including international firms Bechtel and EG&G where he obtained a Department of Energy (DOE) Top Secret Security Clearance. Tim held Vice President positions with industry leading insurance carriers with responsibilities for Underwriting, Risk Management, Claims Analysis and Industry Relations. Mr. Corbett is a member of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) American Institute of Architects (AIA), the United States Green Building Counsel (USGBC) and the Enterprise Risk Management Academy (ERMA) and sits on their educational advisory board. As a member of a number of national committees, Tim is regularly called upon as a speaker at regional, national, international forums. Tim has been published and quoted in professional publications, including authoring the risk management chapter for Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Project Deliver Practice Guide (PDPG) 2nd edition. He also owns copyrights for conducting firm specific risk assessments and risk mitigating strategies. Mr. Corbett holds a BS in Security Risk Management, MS in Management focusing on organizational development and process improvement, completed Environmental Science studies, obtained a certificate in Architectural Design Technology, is Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) accredited and is Enterprise Risk Management Governance Certified (CERG).
