The building code lags behind worldwide best practices for meeting the needs of our neurodiverse and physically disabled community members. This presentation will introduce these diverse communities, and specific strategies to accommodate the four most common areas of complaint. Practical and cost-conscious methods will be discussed, as well as the importance of engaging with those underserved communities to create recommendations for design teams.

  • Learn the 7 primary principles of Universal Design.

  • Discover why Universal Design is so important in the design process.

  • Understand the 4 most common complaints by users of marginalized communities.

  • Learn simple design considerations that address these 4 concerns.

Joshua has over two decades of experience and is a principal of accessibility and universal design projects. He has worked on everything from high rise high schools to master plans of multi-campus higher education. With extensive experience with existing buildings, Joshua is a veteran of accessibility initiatives on the leading edge of educating and supporting clients by integrating universal design into their projects to surpass the code minimums and accommodate more individuals’ needs.
